I have 21 minutes before Vietnamese class starts so I am going to give a very quick update. First off, I love riding the bus. My homestay sister hooked me up with a ticket booklet so now when I get on the bus all I have to do is drop a voucher in the box to get a ticket instead of paying. It makes it way easier and plus makes me look like I totally know what I am doing, which I sort of do. Not trying to toot my own horn but I feel like such a champ when tourists gawk at me getting onto the bus. They're probably jealous, thinking I am a fountain of knowledge of the public transportation system. Too bad that I only know my bus route, my confidence would go out the door if I tried to ride another bus line. I love sticking out my arm, palm down, and flapping my hand so the bus pulls over. And I also get so much joy out of pressing the red button to let the driver know that I want to get off at the next stop. I am like the little kid that gets mad if someone else pushes the button in the elevator.
The other night I had jellyfish for dinner. I didn't even know that you could eat jellyfish! I was taken by surprised when I bit into it and it was crunchy. It was like a crisp apple. So interesting. I liked it! That same night we also had octopus– the jellyfish trumped the octopus for exotic food of the night. I never thought that I would be at a meal where octopus was an ordinary dish.
Last night I attended my first gio– the death anniversary of an ancestor. It was a big celebration taking place in my house. There were so many people and so much food. More to come on that. I am just getting lots of cultural experiences because guess what today is? My first Vietnamese wedding. Yay yay yay! I walk down the aisle at 6. Be there or be an uptight square.
